Premium Fillings
Unsightly metal fillings can make an otherwise perfect set of teeth look unattractive. Now there are fillings specially designed to match the natural color of the tooth. Contemporary fillings, however, are usually “tooth” colored and practically invisible to the untrained eye. These tooth-colored fillings can be used to replace old and worn silver amalgam, gold or other metal fillings for aesthetic purposes.
These new substances have a white hue and can be made from several different origins such as composite resin, glass ionomer cement (GIC), and porcelain ceramics. These materials are very resilient and long lasting in addition to their visual advantages, but can become discolored over time. Just like metal fillings, these can be set and cured within one visit to the dentist, although they may take a little bit longer.
Tooth-colored fillings are priced similar to metallic alloys; they tend to be cheaper than precious metals but more expensive than common metals. Dr. Stevens is a dentist in Upland, CA who spends time to make the contour of his fillings appear natural He has over 10 different shades to match your tooth as close as possible.
What Are Crowns?
Crowns are used to strengthen and improve the shape, size or color of teeth. They can support broken or weak teeth or those with large fillings: provide a smooth, strong, attractively contoured surface for stained, misshapen or otherwise abnormal teeth: and aid in the implementation of bridges and other implants. A dental crown is a restoration that covers or caps a tooth, restoring it to its normal size and shape while strengthening it and improving its appearance. Crowns are necessary when the tooth is broken down to the point where a filling won't be effective.
A dental crown can be used to:
Hold a cracked tooth together to prevent further damage
Cover and support a tooth with a large filling where only a little of the original tooth is left
Attach a bridge
Protect a weak tooth from breaking
Restore a broken tooth
Cover a discolored or misshapen tooth
Cover a dental implant
Place on a tooth that has had root canal therapy.

What Is The Dental Crown Procedure Like?
Before we put in a dental crown, we first have to prepare your tooth. We will remove part of the tooth so the crown can fit in securely and comfortably. The area around your tooth will be numbed throughout the procedure with a local anesthetic.
After the tooth is prepared, we will make an impression of your teeth and gums using a rubber-like material. This will be sent to a laboratory to make your custom crown, which usually takes 1 to 2 weeks. You will be given a temporary dental crown until your permanent crown is ready. Dr. Stevens uses a local dental laboratory in Upland, CA to fabricate the crowns. There is one main advantage in using a local dental laboratory. The dentist can send the patient to the Laboratory to match the shade for unusually difficult shade matches.
Finally, the temporary crown is removed and the new one is cemented onto the tooth.
What Are The Different Types Of Dental Crowns Available?
There are several different methods of crown restoration, each using a different crown material.
Metal crowns are made entirely of a metal alloy that may include gold, silver, palladium, or other elements. Compared with other kinds of crowns, metal crowns preserve more of the tooth structure. They withstand biting and chewing forces well and rarely chip or break. The biggest drawback of metal crowns is the metallic color.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns can be color-matched to your teeth. Second only to all-ceramic crowns in appearance, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns look like normal teeth. PFM crowns are good in strength for back teeth.
All-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns provide the best natural color and look of all the dental crowns. Because they are the most cosmetically pleasing, they are usually used for the front teeth. The all ceramic crowns contain a tooth colored underlying material known as Zirconia. The porcelain is on the outer layer.
What Are Bridges?
Dental bridges are natural-looking tooth replacements that help maintain facial structure, reduce stress on the jaw and fill in the gaps caused by missing teeth. Fixed bridges are cemented to the existing teeth and do not come out. Removable bridges can be taken out.
A dental bridge can be used to:
Replace missing teeth
Restore your smile
Restore your ability to bite and chew
Improve your speech
Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position.
Types Of Dental Bridges
There are three main types of bridges:
Traditional bridges, also known as fixed bridges, are used to replace one or more missing teeth. The procedure involves creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic (false tooth) in between. Unlike dentures, fixed bridges cannot be taken out of your mouth. These are the most common type of dental bridge and are made either of porcelain fused to metal or of ceramics.
Resin bonded bridges, also known as Maryland bonded bridges, are primarily used for your front teeth. They are less expensive than fixed bridges and are best when the teeth are healthy and do not have any large fillings. A false tooth is fused with resin to metal bands that are bonded to the adjacent teeth and hidden from view. Resin bonded bridges require minimal preparation of the adjacent teeth.
Cantilever bridges are used in areas of your mouth that are under low amounts of stress, such as your front teeth. Cantilever bridges are recommended when there are teeth on only one side of the open space.
Dental Bridge Procedure
First, the adjacent teeth must be prepared. This involves removing some of the enamel to allow room for the crown to be placed over them.
Next, impressions of your teeth are made. These will be sent to a laboratory so we can create the bridge, pontic, and crowns to fit your unique mouth. This may take 1 to 2 weeks. While your bridge is being made, you will be given a temporary dental bridge to protect the exposed teeth. Dr. Stevens uses a local dental laboratory in Upland, CA to fabricate the Bridge.
On your next visit, your temporary bridge will be removed and replaced with the new, permanent bridge. Your doctor will make sure the bridge fits properly and then cement it to your teeth. You should start noticing a difference when you speak, as your speech will become clearer.
Results Of Dental Bridge
With good oral hygiene, you can expect your dental bridge to last from 5 to 15 years, sometimes longer. You must remember to practice proper oral hygiene to prevent the build-up of bacteria on your teeth and gums.
What Is Bonding?
Dental bonding is a special filling that can restore, reshape and rejuvenate your teeth, improving both the function and the appearance of your smile. By applying a thin layer of tooth-colored plastic to the front of the tooth and sculpting it like clay, your dentist may use bonding to correct chipped or cracked teeth, broken or misshapen teeth, stained teeth or spaces between teeth.
Dental Bonding Material. The dental bonding material is a composite resin (plastic) that hardens and fuses to the tooth when your dentist shines a special light on it. Once in place, the bonding material is shaped to correct the specific problem at hand, colored to match your natural teeth, and polished until it's smooth.
Dental Bonding Process. In the first step of the dental bonding process, your dentist applies an etching solution to the tooth or teeth that will be receiving the bonding material; this gently roughens the surface of the tooth for a stronger bond between the tooth and the plastic.
Next, your dentist places a thin layer of the bonding resin on the surface of your tooth and seals it in place using a special light. Several layers of resin may be added and hardened in turn. Each layer takes only a few minutes to harden.
Then, your dentist sculpts the bonding material to the desired shape and colors it to match the shade of your natural teeth. Finally, the bonding material is polished until it is entirely smooth.
The dental bonding procedure takes one to two hours. Its results last about ten years.
Types of Dental Bonding There are two main kinds of dental bonding: small, simple fillings like the ones described above that can be done in a single appointment, and more complex fillings that require at least two appointments.
Results of Dental Bonding Bonded teeth look and function just like your natural teeth. The dental bonding material can be colored as well as molded, so it is often possible to match the shade of your teeth. When bonding is performed by an experienced dentist, people won't be able to tell that you've had cosmetic work done on your teeth-except for how good your smile will look when the bonding is done!
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are a fantastic way to repair or enhance the appearance of front teeth. They can be used to whiten teeth, close spaces and create a great smile. Using veneers, we can even perform virtually "instant orthodontics" to straighten crooked teeth and give you the bright smile you always wanted.
Reduce or eliminate spaces between the teeth (diastemas)
Repair broken or chipped teeth
Whiten dark, yellow, permanently stained or discolored teeth
Correct misshapen or crooked teeth
With Porcelain veneers it is a 2 visit process to the dentist. At the first visit, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front surface and sometimes side surfaces of the tooth. A mold of your teeth is taken by a dentist. The mold is taken to a local dental laboratory in Upland, CA to make the permanent porcelain veneer. It usually takes 1 week for the dental Laboratory to make the veneer. The patient usually wears a temporary acrylic veneer between the 2 visits. At the second visit, the temporary veneer is removed. Then the thin porcelain veneer is bonded to your tooth giving it a natural appearance.
What Are Dental Implants?
Tooth loss is a common condition that can occur as a result of disease, trauma or poor dental hygiene. The best treatment for tooth loss is to replace the missing tooth, which can help prevent gum damage and tooth damage, as well as restore comfort and confidence in social situations. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root used to support tooth replacement structures such as crowns, bridges, and dentures. Dental implants help patients regain the ability to eat, speak and smile without the pain and embarrassment of missing teeth.
Dental implants are titanium cylinders that are surgically implanted into the jawbone to replace the roots of the missing tooth. The replacement structure is supported by the implant and looks and feels like a natural tooth. Implants offer permanent results and full functionality, which can result in people not knowing that you lost teeth in the first place.
Benefits Of Dental Implants
Dental implants offer many benefits over other tooth replacement methods. Implants provide a natural replacement that looks and feels like your own tooth. Since the implants are drilled directly into the gum and bone and act as a natural tooth root would, patients can enjoy the same comfort and confidence they experienced before tooth loss.
Implants provide sturdy, long-lasting results by preventing bone loss and gum recession. They do not sacrifice the strength of neighboring teeth like traditional bridges do, preserving your overall tooth health with added strength and reliability.
Dental Implant Procedure
Dental implants are placed during a few appointments over several months. During the first procedure, the titanium anchors are placed in the jaw. Over the next three to six months, the anchors heal and fuse to the bone, a period known as osseointegration. Then a preformed abutment is placed on top of the implant so that a crown can be placed.
A crown can be used to replace one tooth, a bridge can replace several teeth, and a full bridge or full denture can replace all teeth. The replacement teeth can be treated just like natural teeth and require regular home care and dental visits.
Candidates For Dental Implants
Dental implants are recommended for patients in good general and oral health. A certain amount of bone in the jaw is required to support the implant, so a bone graft procedure may be required. Dental implants can be used for people who have gum disease or problem teeth, currently wear dentures or have bone loss. Most people see successful results from dental implants. Implants are not recommended for children because their jaw bones are not fully developed and can affect the appearance and function of the implant. Dr. Stevens uses local specialists such as Oral Surgeons or Periodontists in Upland and Rancho Cucamonga, CA to place the implant and preformed abutment. Dr. Stevens then takes an impression and uses a local lab in Upland and Montclair, CA to fabricate the crown.

What Are Root Canals?
Every tooth has a space located in the center of the crown and root portions of the tooth. This space is referred to as the pulp. The pulp contains nerve and blood tissue. When tooth decay is deep and enters this space, or a tooth has severe trauma, the pulp becomes infected. Then root canal therapy is needed.
The basic procedure is done as follows. A dental hand piece is used to remove all the decay and the contents of the pulp are also totally removed, leaving an empty space. Instruments are used to clean and shape the space. The root space is then filled with a rubberlike material. The roots and crown portion of the tooth remain. Then a permanent filling is placed to replace all missing tooth structure from tooth decay and upper crown portion of the missing pulp space. Once a tooth has had root canal therapy the tooth is weakened. After root canal therapy and the permanent filling are placed, a crown is then placed on the tooth by a dentist. The crown strengthens and protects the tooth.
